Art students recreate 18 “masterpieces” on the breakwater of Shimo-Sazanami Fishing Port [25-year ago today]

 

Five students from Kanazawa College of Art have recreated 18 paintings on the breakwater of Shimo-Sazanami Fishing Port in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The total number of paintings reaches 48.

 

The paintings are about 120 cm tall and 160 cm wide and include masterpieces such as Van Gogh’s Harvest in Provence and Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.

Q. Why were the paintings recreated at the fishing port?

Shoji Katsukii, the president of Sazanami Buriami Co., Ltd. (Nanao City), started the project in 1997 with art students from Kanazawa College of Art to decorate the breakwater of Shimo-Sazanami Fishing Port with oil paintings to bring spiritual richness to workers and visitors.
