Water supply to the Kenrokuen Garden was suspended for the first time due to water shortage [25-year ago today]
The Tatsumi Canal Land Improvement District has decided to stop the water supply to the Kenrokuen Garden for the first time due to concerns about the negative impact on crops, which is an organization operated by farmers who use the irrigation water and maintain the canal.
The water supply to Kenrokuen has never stopped even during past droughts because preserving the garden’s beauty is superior. Farmers along the Tatsumi Canal, however, couldn’t avoid claiming concerns about water shortages this summer, which led to the first decision above.
The following day, the Tatsumi Canal Land Improvement District will decide it officially.
Q. What is the Tatsumi Canal?
Following the destruction of Kanazawa Castle in 1631, this irrigation canal was built to secure water for the castle and to provide water for fire prevention.
A water intake and water pipe were laid along the canal to draw clear water to Kenrokuen later.
The irrigation canal supplies water to rice paddies and orchards, as well as to the pond garden of Kenrokuen. The harsh water shortage this summer led to the first policy decision.
