Yoshiro Mori Becomes Ishikawa’s First Postwar Prime Minister [25-year ago today]
Yoshiro Mori, elected from Ishikawa Prefecture, has assumed office as the 85th Prime Minister of Japan. He is the first postwar prime minister from Ishikawa Prefecture.
Q. Who is Yoshiro Mori?
Born in Neagari Town, Nomi District, Ishikawa Prefecture (now Nomi City), Yoshiro Mori developed his aspiration for politics while at Waseda University as a member of the Debating Society. Despite opposition from his relatives, he ran for office and was elected to the House of Representatives in December 1969 from Ishikawa’s 1st district as an independent candidate, securing the top position. He was 32 years old at the time.
He went on to win ten consecutive elections until the 41st House of Representatives election. In 1983, he entered the cabinet for the first time as the Minister of Education in the Second Nakasone Cabinet. Within Ishikawa Prefecture, he contributed to the comprehensive relocation of Kanazawa University and the establishment of the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
He later served as Minister of International Trade and Industry and Minister of Construction, making efforts toward the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen and the completion of the Hakusan Tunnel.
In 2000, he became the Prime Minister of Japan, serving for a total of 387 days before stepping down. He retired from politics in 2012.
