Local newspaper reports Yellowtails traveled 490 km north to Aomori in 3 days [25-Year Ago Today]

The Toyama Prefectural Fisheries Research Institute (Namerikawa City) has been conducting a study to track the migration route of Yellowtails since January 1999. It implanted satellite tracking systems into the bellies of 20 Yellowtails caught in Toyama Bay.

To verify the data, it recaptured some of the released Yellowtails. One Yellowtail caught off the coast of Fukaura Town, Aomori Prefecture, remained near the Noto Peninsula until mid-summer, then passed south of Sado Island and traveled a total of 490 km north to the waters off Aomori Prefecture in just three days.

Local newspapers reported comments from researchers at the Toyama Prefectural Fisheries Research Institute.

Q: How do Yellowtails live?

Researchers at the Toyama Prefectural Fisheries Research Institute summarized their research from 1999 to 2002 in a paper titled Migration of Adult Yellowtail in the Tsushima Warm Current Region Estimated by Tagged Records.

Although not all Yellowtails exhibit the same movements, spawning occurs in the East China Sea, located in the southwest of Japan, where juvenile Yellowtails grow before reaching adulthood.

After that, young Yellowtails spread from the waters off Korea and western Japan and ride the Tsushima Warm Current through the Tsushima Strait. They then migrate across a wide area, such as off the Noto Peninsula, off Aomori Prefecture, and the south of Sado Island.
