Y2K Problem: Despite Preparations, No Issues Occurred [25-Year Ago Today]

In response to the Y2K problem, various departments, including electricity, telecommunications, transportation, police, medical institutions, and public agencies, had made preparations. However, at midnight on January 1, 2000, no issues were reported.

In the cities, fireworks lit up the sky to celebrate the arrival of the new millennium, long lines formed at Shinto shrines across three prefectures of the Hokuriku region, and citizens welcomed the year 2000 in a festive mood.

Q. What measures were taken?

Hokuriku Electric Power set up a countermeasure headquarters at 8:00 PM on December 31. Around 60 supervisors monitored the operational status of power plants, including the Shiga Nuclear Power Plant. Altogether, 830 staff members continued inspection work until around 8:00 AM on January 1.

The police set up countermeasure headquarters and deployed more officers than usual to conduct checks on traffic lights and maintain security.

Major hospitals and public institutions also set up headquarters and assigned staff to ensure no malfunctions in medical equipment.

NTT West Japan, JR West Japan, and private railway companies also conducted various inspections and safety checks.

Some citizens made large pots of curry and bought flashlights for possible disruptions to essential services, but all concerns were unfounded.
