Fisherman Adrift off Himi Coast Found on the Fourth Day in the Waters off Kashiwazaki City [An Incident from 25 Years Ago Today]
A man from Shinminato City, Toyama Prefecture, had been drifting in the waters approximately 2 kilometers southwest of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, and a helicopter from the 9th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters rescued him. He had been missing since the early morning of the 20th when he disappeared off the Himi City coast, Toyama Prefecture. His rescue occurred on the fourth day after he went missing.
The man survived by wearing a life jacket, using a raincoat to keep warm, and sustaining himself with biscuits and juice. On the night of the third day, he dropped anchor near the location where he discovered the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant lights. Despite being repeatedly threatened by strong winds and high waves caused by a winter atmospheric pressure system, he remained determined to survive and awaited rescue.
The man’s family, having given up hope for his survival, had boarded a fishing vessel to pray for his soul at sea when the miraculous news of his rescue reached them. They rejoiced at his safe return.
Q. Why was he adrift?
During a tuna fishing trip, dense fog enveloped him, and his boat’s propeller became entangled in a fishing net, rendering it unable to move. When the rescue reached him, his radio equipment was also inoperable.
