Tsubata Police Traffic Section Chief conducted a Bike-gang Joining Prevention Class at Uchinada High School [25-year ago today]

 

At the closing ceremony of Ishikawa Prefectural Uchinada High School, the Tsubata Police Traffic Chief conducted a bike-gang joining prevention class for about 680 students.

 

He explained that most bike gangs were 17 years old, and the young gangs tended to join through the relationships between seniors and juniors in their schools; he urged students not to join.

Q. How many bike gangs were there?

According to the White Paper on Crime 2019, the number of bike gangs nationwide peaked at 42,510 in 1982 (32,368 were juveniles) and continued to decrease throughout the Heisei era, reaching 5,028 (3,023) in 2018.

 

The number of groups, however, continued to increase after the peak of the bike gang number, reaching 1,313 groups in 2002.

 

At the time of this news in 1999, the number of bike gangs was 23,704 (18,369 were juveniles), and groups were 1,132.

 

The number of groups had decreased to 134 in 2018.
