More than 20 anime statues of Reiji Matsumoto were completed in front of Tsuruga Station [25-year ago today]

 

Bronze statues based on the anime characters from Reiji Matsumoto’s Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999 have been completed in front of Tsuruga Station in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture.

 

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Tsuruga Port opening, they were installed along Symbol Road, the shopping street from Tsuruga Station to Kehi Shrine.

Q. Why did Tsuruga City build anime statues from Reiji Matsumoto’s works?

Tsuruga is home to Tsuruga Port, nuclear power plants, and Tsuruga Station, a stopover on the Europe-Asia International Express. The city promoted its image as a port, science, and station city.

 

It offered Reiji Matsumoto to build the statues on the 100th anniversary of the Tsuruga Port opening because Reiji Matsumoto’s works would match this image.

 

Tsuruga, having 28 bronze statues related to Reiji Matsumoto’s works, is said to have the largest collection of his works in Japan.
