Takahama Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 output dropped due to a jellyfish swarm [25-year ago today]

Kansai Electric Power Co. reduced the output of a reactor to 76% at the Takahama Nuclear Power Plant in Takahama Town, Fukui Prefecture, due to the influence of a jellyfish swarm.

Several jellyfish flocked to the reactor’s seawater intake and clogged the channel’s dust filter.

Q. Why does Takahama Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 intake seawater?

Takahama Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 has a device that cools and condenses the heated steam generated to turn the turbine connected to the generator, turning it back into water.

Seawater is utilized for cooling, which goes to the condenser to cool the steam by a circulating water pump and leaves from the discharge channel to the sea. The influence of the jellyfish also stopped this circulating water pump.
