Affluence Index abolished, which Fukui Prefecture won after five consecutive years [25-year ago today]
In the New People’s Life Indicators (Affluence Index), the Economic Planning Agency of Japan has abolished releasing the overall ranking of “affluence” by prefecture due to the strong opposition from prefectural governors with lower rankings.
They insisted the rankings did not match their actual feelings. Taichi Sakaiya, the president of the Economic Planning Agency of Japan, stated at a press conference that a national institute should not publish such incorrect indicators.
In the previous year’s ranking by prefecture, Fukui in the Hokuriku region had won the first position for five consecutive years.
Q. What is the New National Living Index (Affluence Index)?
The New National Living Index is a revised index of the National Living Index, started in 1992, to quantify the “affluence” of people’s lives. The Economic Planning Agency of Japan (now the Cabinet Office) revealed the result annually.
National and prefectural indexes exist, and the prefectural index began in 1993.
To create a wealth index different from monetary wealth, hundreds of statistics were classified into eight categories, and results were indexed and ranked using a standard deviation method.
The last publication of the New National Living Indicators was in 1999.
