Public hearings on the capital relocation end in Kanazawa [25-year ago today]
The National Diet Relocation Council public hearing sessions ended on the 18th in Kanazawa.
Seventy-two presenter from the nine venues, from Osaka to Kanazawa, expressed their opinions. As a result, 34 outvoted in favor, 23 against, and 15 did not state their opinion.
After visiting the candidate cities and holding a series of public hearings, the council members will select one candidate site, and submit a report to the Prime Minister on the best place for the new capital.
Q. What is the capital relocation?
On December 19, 1996, the National Diet Relocation Council, an advisory body to the Prime Minister established by law, conducted 31 investigations and discussions to select the candidate site for the capital relocation and presented opinions to the Prime Minister.
After the public hearing sessions 1999, the council was to narrow down the final candidate site and submit a report, but the judgment had trouble due to the vague evaluation. Consequently, the expert committee members submitted three candidate regions on December 20 of the same year.
The three sites were the Tochigi/Fukushima region, Gifu/Aichi region, and Mie/Kyoto region.
The Prime Minister reported it to the Diet the following day, but the discussion has not been lively since all the expert committee members retired at the end of their terms in December 2000.
