A national meeting considering wetlands and mud flats was in Tsuruga City, where a gas base will open. Concerned citizens would stop the plan [25-year ago today]

Japan Wetlands Action Network held a national meeting that considered wetlands, mud flats, and woodlands near villages in the 21st century in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture. About 250 participants gathered from all over the country.

They visited Nakaikemi Wetland, where a mayor announced a construction plan for an LNG base in 1992, and they learned about the existence of endangered plants and animals to preserve the wetland.

Q. Where is Nakaikemi Wetland?

Surrounded by three mountains, it is a bowl-shaped wetland (the depth is 80m) at Okuhorikiri, 79 Kashimagari, Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland in 2012.

In 1992, the mayor of the day announced a plan for Osaka Gas (Osaka City) to build an LNG base at Nakaikemi Wetland. This sudden announcement urged citizens to launch a preservation campaign.

After the national meeting in 1999, Osaka Gas officially announced canceling its plans in 2000. The citizens’ groups sought the preservation of the wetland and welcomed this decision.
