Kanazawa’s Tatemachi Yoshimoto Theater Ends with Final Performance [25 Years Ago Today]

The final regular performance was held at the Tatemachi Yoshimoto Theater in Kanazawa’s Tatemachi district. The show featured exclusive talent from the local area, such as Pompu and Hattori, as well as Ohayou, who is affiliated with the Tokyo headquarters of Yoshimoto Kogyo. The performers entertained the audience with comedy sketches and talk shows. In the climax of the show, a local comedian, who was also an exclusive talent of Tatemachi Yoshimoto Theater, held his wedding ceremony on stage with his wife, whom he had married two years earlier.

Q. What was the Tatemachi Yoshimoto Theater?

It was a theater that once existed in the Tatemachi district of Kanazawa. The Tatemachi Shopping Street Promotion Association, with financial assistance from Ishikawa Prefecture and the city of Kanazawa, renovated an empty storefront in Tatemachi and opened the theater on July 6, 1996. The theater held regular performances twice a month, featuring comedians from Yoshimoto Kogyo and exclusive local talent from Tatemachi Yoshimoto Theater, who entertained young people, mainly junior high and high school students. However, due to a decrease in audience numbers, rising operating costs, and a shift in the policies of the Tatemachi Shopping Street, the theater’s role was reevaluated, and the regular performances that had been held since 1996 were brought to an end.
