Morita-ya, Iconic Restaurant in Higashimachi, Toyama, Closes After Nearly 90 Years [25-year ago today]
Founded in the late Meiji era, the restaurant had been operating with efforts to downsize its business, switching to a reservation-only system and having chefs come from other establishments for reserved days.
However, the owner finally decided to close due to a lack of successors, changes in entertainment preferences, a decline in guests, and a prolonged economic recession.
Q. What was Morita-ya?
Higashimachi was once a lively entertainment district with many restaurants and over 60 geisha. Morita-ya was the district’s most historically significant and prestigious restaurant, loved by government officials, corporate executives, governors, mayors, and company presidents.
