Noto Winery Signs Agreement for Farm: First Step Toward “Wine Town” [25-year ago today]

In response to the opening of Noto Airport and the town’s revitalization plan, Ishikawa Prefecture’s Anamizu Town unveiled a wine-making concept.

The agricultural production corporation, Noto Winery (a subsidiary of the wine manufacturing company Hokkaido Wine, headquartered in Otaru, Hokkaido), signed a lease agreement for approximately 40 hectares of land to be used as a direct management farm with local creditors at Anamizu Town Hall.

Q. What is Noto Winery?

Noto Winery, established in 2000 as an agricultural production corporation under the umbrella of Hokkaido Wine, was created to grow grapes for wine production. Tree planting began in April 2001, followed by the completion of the wine prototype in 2002. In 2003, the first Noto Wine was produced.

Initially, there were plans for a Hokkaido Wine-operated winery, but those plans were scrapped due to the economic downturn and the end of the wine boom. As a result, Anamizu Town began preparations to build the first winery in the prefecture with support from the national and prefectural governments. Consequently, Noto Wine Co., Ltd. was established in 2004 with investments from local agricultural cooperatives (JA) and businesses, tasked with wine production and sales.

In 2006, a winery facility was completed in Anamizu Town. The Noto Winery continued to supply grapes (the raw material for wine), while Noto Wine Co., Ltd. handled wine production and sales.

In 2014, Noto Winery changed its name to Hokkaido Wine Noto Vineyard.
